Global School

The goal of the Global School is to support the teaching of global education in schools.

The initiative is mainly supported by The Peace Education Institute and works in co-operation with different NGOs, the City of Oulu education office, and the Faculty of Education at the University of Oulu.

Material produced by NGOs is collected at the Global School and is available for schools to use. There is a library at the Global School, where material which has been collected can be accessed and loaned from the library. A part of the material is also given out for schools to use as part of a material package handed out through training, visits to schools and presentations.

The Global School also offers ideas and planning help for projects relating to development and global education.

Global education teaching material is available for use in schools

NGOs produce a lot of excellent material about global education, but despite this, much material goes unused because teachers are not aware of it. An important goal of the Global School is to develop ways to incorporate good quality global education material into the school world.

The initiative also offers students who are studying to become primary school teachers the ability to complete a teaching practice by organizing workshops related to global education themes in classrooms.

Material about global education is given out by the Global School to school staffrooms and libraries. In addition to this, there is a wide variety of material available for loan from the Global School library.

Global School suitcases

The Global School also has suitcases containing more information and materials regarding specific themes relating to global education. There are materials such as videos and DVDs, game boards, posters, picture cards, as well as different active and thinking activities. There are also ready lesson plans and suggestions for workshops as well as additional material for teachers to use in the suitcases.

The themes of the suitcases include, among other topics, refugees and immigrants, games and stories about intercultural education, the UN millennium goals, human rights, and equality. The material in the suitcases is easy to use in the classroom and it offers a stimulating and thought-provoking journey into the world of global education.

Training and ideas for teachers

In addition to access to teaching material, teachers can also receive training and participate in workshops to gain ideas about how global issues can be included in the classroom. Teachers can also ask for internet links and networks related to global education issues. There have also been training workshops arranged for teachers by the Global School initiative.
